The Best Walking Shoes for Bunions

Last Updated on

Bunions can be quite painful, and they can prevent you from doing things that you enjoy but the best walking shoes for bunions can greatly help reduce pain and allow you to do more things.

Bunions (also called "Hallux Valgus") form when the bones of the foot near the big toe deviate inwards from their normal position. This results in a lump at the metatarsal big toe joint which sticks out compared to a normal foot.

Shoes that are made to accommodate bunions reduce pressure and rubbing on the protruding bone that would otherwise cause swelliing and soreness.

AMPA (American Podiatric Medical Association) recommends early consulation with a podiatrist as soon as you notice a bunion forming since early treatment is most effective and least disruptive.

In the meantime get the right type of shoes.

Business Casual Sneaker

Upper:

Sole:

Synthetic Cushioned

Insole:

Mid-Quality - Removable

Rating:

93%

General Features:

The SAS Timeout Lace Up provides plenty of space in the toe box which you need to give space to your bunion.

There is plenty of cushioning both from the midsoles and around the shoe collar (to the sides and rear of your heel).

The synthetic soles give good shock absorbance which all adds up to a comfortable walking shoe suited to all day wear for those of us suffering from bunions.

Fitting:

SAS provide a myriad of fitting options for this style with width fittings from very narrow through to Extra Extra Wide.

When combined with the squarer foot shape last used to make the shoe, there should be no problem getting a good fit, width wise at least.

The shoe comes in sizes 6 through 12 and in half sizes as well. Remember that widths increase slightly with length of shoe.

An extra half size in the shoe will give you 1/6th inch or 4.5mm in the length and usually amout 2mm in width.

The insole has areas of special cushioning to the inside and outside balls of your feet and to the heel area to reduce shock to your legs in these areas.

That said you may find that you want to change these for better quality insoles and the higher toe box should allow for that.

Lastly, the lacing system. Whilst fairly conventional there are a few noteworthy features.

Apart from the bottom eyelet, the laces pass through small metal hoops to the sides which makes for easy tensioning of the laces. The last eyelet is a double one providing two options for securing the shoe.

All this means that the shoe will fit a broad spread of instep shapes from low to higher and enables a fairly easy lacing to get the shoe on and off.

Comfort & Cushioning

The shoe sole is made from a shock absorbing synthetic material that provides reasonable grip.

There is good cushioning around the heel and ankles to reduce friction as you walk and the tongue of the shoe is secured in pace with hidden gussets.

No more stopping to reposition the tongue means you can stand and walk all day without continually repositioning the tongue to protect your instep from the laces.

The footbed is anti-bacterial, removable and washable and provides moderate support. There are cushioning pads to the heel and balls of your foot to help provide additional comfort and shock absorbancy.

Some users find the insole not to suit their feet and since they are removable, and there is plenty of space in the shoe, it is an easy task to replace these.

Good quality insoles are a major factor in comfort so if you are a person who is on your feet all day at work, consider custom orthotics as a valuable upgrade.

Style

The SAS Time Out are a good looking pair of business casual sneakers. Restrained styling should fit in with most relaxed business attire policies.

The leather uppers, detailed with small perforations to aid breathability, look classy enough and can be polished and buffed with a suitable cream polish.

These shoes look good with any casual trousers and are available in several colors.

Conclusion

The SAS Time Out shoes for men are great shoes for anyone standing all day such as surgeons, and teachers, chefs & bar staff. Also a great pair of shoes for anyone who is walking all day such as deliverymen, logistics workers and hospital staff.

Well made, stylish shoes that will make way for your bunions.

Business Casual Shoe

Good Quality - Removable

Rating:

87%

General Features:

Dr. Comfort is a renowned manufacturer of shoes to suit various foot conditions.

The Patrick Moccasin-Style Boat Shoe features a wide toe box with decent depth to make space for your toes and allow extra room for your bunion.

The shoe is built on a more spacious shoe last with synthetic shock-absorbing soles, good cushioning for a shoe, and nice looking leather uppers.

Fitting:

With Medium, wide and extra wide fittings readily available and half sizes for length, most of us can find a great fit.

If you have really wide feet or your bunion is very advanced then you might have to go in search of a 4E fitting but they are a bit scarce.

The lacing area is wide allowing for a range of instep shapes, but note that there are only three eyelets to each side.

If you have a very high or low instep then your lacing options are limited which might be a deal breaker. For most people, it will be no problem.

Comfort & Cushioning

The standard insole has gel cushioning to the forefoot and heel but is removable for an upgrade.

The shoe is often sold online with free Dr. Comfort Gel Insoles which have good heel positioning features which reduce slip and rubbing on your bunions. Look out for that.

The leather uppers are premium leather with a rounded moccasin style which should give plenty of comfort around your bunion if you have the sizing right.

Cushioning around the heel is good with a heel counter (stiffer material to the heel back) to encourage heel positioning stability.

Cushioning to the tongue is minimal but it should stay in place since it is part of the main upper, rather than a separate piece of material.

The rubber sole provides ample shock absorbance through your step and is to some degree non-skid.

Style

The mocassin styling is smart enough to wear with Chinos or similar without looking out of place.

If you need to wear a suit then it will have to be a more formal shoe you pick but for most office policies this will fit squarely into the range.

Equally suitable for wearing on nights out unless they involve formal wear.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a business casual shoe design that is bunion friendly, then this moccasin style from Dr. Comfort might well fit the bill.

The all-round easy fit last, good leather uppers and a casually formal shoe style should work in most casual work environments as well as just all day walking shoes.

Definitely worth a look especially if bundled with Dr. Comforts Gel insoles.

Good Quality - Removable

Rating:

91%

General Features:

Another shoe from SAS makes the cut here for its better-shaped shoe last which provides space for bunions better than its competitors.

A wide range of fitting sizes and lacing flexibility should enable a good fit to be had.

The supplied insoles are cushioned to the heel and toe but are removable for replacement orthotics.

A classic leather upper gives a sporty style restrained enough for relaxed offices, casual wear and exercise walking.

Fitting:

Narrow, Medium, Wide and Extra Wide fittings are readily available and half sizes for length, finding a size to fit should be no problem.

The lacing system does start a little high up the instep but has looped eyelets in the main section and double holed lacing eyelets at the instep to enable a good secure fit.

The leather uppers are supple which coupled with the foot-shaped last will give your bunions room.

Comfort & Cushioning

The SAS Journey has a foam midsole between the sole of the shoe and the footbed which does a good job of absorbing the shocks of your feet hitting the ground.

Good cushioning is provided around the shoe collar to give a little love to your Achilles and generally improve comfort especially if you are walking all day. Rubbing in that area will lead to blisters so that’s a big plus.

The supplied insole is of moderate quality providing cushioning to the heel and toe areas to add to the shock protection in those vulnerable parts of your foot.

But support for your foot arches may need an upgrade for some which can be achieved with custom insoles since those that come with the shoes are removable.

You will need to test out to see if you get along with the supplied insoles or not.

The shoe is a quality shoe and custom insoles are definitely a viable option.

Overall comfort and cushioning is very good for this men's walking shoe even if your work has you walking or standing on your feet all day long.

Style

The SAS Journey are a little more a shoe for regular walking than the Time Out but will still suit most rules for attire unless very strict.

They are perfect for work in less formal enviroments such as retail service, delivery, warehousing and hospital support staff.

Conclusion

The SAS Journey is a very good walking shoe providing a premium level of comfort and plenty of space for in the toe box for bunion sufferers.

It has a restrained yet sporty style which should fit into most relaxed work situations but is a little more informal than the Time Out.

Definitely worth the money and the extra cost of custom orthotics of the supplied insoles don’t provide the right support for your foot arch.

The mesh and leather combination uppers which is also available, provides more breathability so consider those also if the styling will work for you.

Orthopedic Semi-Formal

Fitting:

Half Sizes

Sole:

Rubber Cushioned

Insole:

Good Quality - Removable

Rating:

92%

General Features:

Orthofeet have a real winner with the Gramercy shoe because it is a well-made semi-formal shoe that suits many purposes from work to pleasure.

The leather uppers are a little more structured in design than the SAS winners above. It is a shoe made for people with foot problems.

If you are looking for a semi-formal shoe for work and days out then this could be it. Good cushioning and a premium orthotic insole comes standard.

Fitting:

Width fittings for Medium, Wide and Extra Wide feet and all are usually readily available.

For length, the shoe is readily available from 7 through 14 in half sizes.

There are four eyelets to each side of the shoe throat which is adequate to secure the shoe to your foot.

The tongue is formed as part of the main upper so should not have any slippage issues.

The slightly detailed leather uppers work with a quite square shaped sole to provide lots of width and depth to accommodate feet with bunions.

Comfort & Cushioning

The shoe gives plenty of shock absorbance from the synthetic mid and outer soles which is further enhanced by the premium orthotics supplied that provides yet more cushioning, good arch support and moisture wicking.

There is a padded leather collar with fabric cushioning around the shoe collar to finish off a well cushioned and comfortable shoe.

With plenty of room for your toes, these shoes should provide an excellent solution to any bunion problem.

Do be sure to select the right size though and measure your feet.

You might find my post on foot measurement and brand sizing charts a useful tool for that.

Style

For more formal office environments the Gramercy offers enough formality for all but the most strict.

The leather uppers are slightly detailed brogue style, but very restrained, and are otherwise quite classic.

If you need to be smart casual these will do fine too - and all in some comfort.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a more custom orthotic solution in a semi-formal business, work or casual shoe then you should give the Orthofeet Gramercy serious consideration.

We recommend this shoe a lot on this site and with good reason. For feet with bunions, it is a great option.

Fitting:

Medium to Extra Extra Wide 5E

Length:

Half Sizes

Leather & Flexible Fabric

Sole:

Insole:

Double Depth - Removable

Rating:

82%

General Features:

The Propet MPED3 is a specialist shoe to deal with serious foot conditions such as late-stage bunions before surgery or for wear once recovery from bunion surgery is underway.

They are super spacious and flexible though with some structure unlike their all flex-fabric competitors.

This improves the stability of the shoe whilst retaining the comfort around the affected bunion.

The extra depth to the toe box provides room for your toes to move and reduces the likelihood of bunion pain.

The main issue is in durability. The soles are not made for long term use outside being very soft material unable to handle lots of walking. Absolutely great for indoor use though.

Fitting:

Medium to 5E provides a good range of width fittings to suit almost everyone.

Lengths are again available in half sizes from 8 up to 15.

The shoe has a double insole arrangement so that you can choose the best depth of fit by removing the bottom one - or not - as needed.

Obviously, the insoles are thus removable and you could change out for custom orthotics.

If you have late stage bunions or have just had your bunion straightened out with surgery, the distances you will be walking will not be great.

So given the likely use and limited walking that you will be doing in these, it is probably not very likely you would fit custom orthotics anyway.

Comfort & Cushioning

The shoe is very cushioned with its soft spongy rubber outsole and generally relaxed fit to minimize pressure on sensitive areas such as bunions.

The back part of the shoe is made in leather with a good quality heel counter at the rear to give the shoe some structure and stability.

There is lots of room for your toes to spread out and the flex uppers will ensure your bunions are not pressured and rubbed with every step.

Style

Well look, this isn't exactly designed for style. Let's face it, it is a slipper cum shoe designed for a specific purpose.

If you are buying a pair of these shoes then style is not likely to be top of your list of must haves!

Conclusion

For severe bunions or late-stage bunions, it is very hard to find a shoe that will fit without causing significant pain.

These shoes are designed to cater to the worst bunion cases or for the period after bunion surgery where your foot will be incredibly sensitive.

When I say post surgery I am not referring to you walking out of the hospital in these but rather once your recovery process has started.

A very good pair of shoes for this specific use type.

Rating:

General Features:

A plain design with a flexible upper and deep and wide toe box design to accommodate various foot shapes including bunions.

The rubber sole provides shock absorbency and premium insoles provide support and cushioning.

Fitting:

The Orthofeet Bismarck has width fittings ranging from Medium up to Extra Extra Wide and sizes from 7 to 15 and half sizes up to size 12.

The shoe comes with spacers which allows you to customize the fit if you find the shoe a little too big in places.

It is easy to get the shoe on and off with a velcro strap and buckle arrangement that allows the shoe to be opened up quite wide.

The strap pulls down across the instep providing a secure fit for all but high instep types - because the strap is not quite as long as it should be for those wearers.

Comfort & Cushioning

The Bismarck uppers are designed with bunions in mind. They stretch to make way for that protrusion and afford a good relaxed fit.

The inside of the uppers have no seams which ensure no shoe protrusions to rub against your tender skin.

Its premium orthotic gives plenty of under-arch support which is overlaid with quality cushioning to give a really good feel underfoot.

There is good cushioning to the heel and around the collar of the shoe as well.

Style

Style is not the aim here but as specialist orthopedic shoes go they look pretty swish really.

It is the material that gives the shoe its look far more than the actual design of the shoe.

It passes for a smartish casual shoe and that should be good enough I guess.

Conclusion

It is really hard to find a good dress shoe suited to bunion sufferers. The toe boxes are either not wide enough, too low or the shoes are not made in wide enough fittings or are just plain uncomfortable.

The Bismarck, whilst not strictly a formal shoe would pass as formal enough for all but the most formal occasions.

We have labeled it a casual business shoe but it is flexible enough to fit into a semi-formal category.

They suit people with bunions of all but the most extreme cases and so might be a good fit for people who need a more formal business or dress shoe but are limited in choice because of the severity of their bunion.

Rating:

General Features:

A hiking boot specifically designed for bunion sufferers that cater to the hiking and community from excellent European hiking & mountaineering footwear manufacturer.

No seams at the big toe joint area to rub your foot and made on a bunion friendly shoe last for optimum shape to suit your foot.

Fitting:

Sizes from UK size 6 to 13 which is equivalent to US sizes 7.5 to 14.5 as they come up a little small.

There is only one width fitting for these which is medium and for that reason, I do not recommend them if you have wide feet.

An excellent lacing system starts low on the instep with a hoop and hook system that extends to the top of the foot which will accommodate almost any instep shape.

Comfort & Cushioning

This is a premium hiking boot with excellent cushioning around the Achilles and with a well-padded collar and boot tongue which is gusseted to stop debris entering inside the boot which would cause sores.

The uppers are in lovely Nubuck soft leather with added reinforcement to the heels to provide stability to the boot.

Excellent grip from Vibram outsoles.

Style

You would never guess that this hiking boot was made for bunions.

In the world of hiking boots the style is fairly typical with laces up to your leg and large padded tongue and collar to the boot.

Personally, I think it looks awesome!

Conclusion

A good solution for hikers with bunions though the European sizing may put some off.

Excellent last shape designed specifically for the condition makes this a one of a kind hiking boot - well two of a kind actually as Hanwag also make a Valungo model which is a little hard to source.

Supportive

Rating:

98%

General Features:

These are the exact sandals I have and they are excellent despite my wide foot!

A solid sandal with a supportive yet firm insole and metatarsal support.

Super flexible for sizing and do not be put off that only medium width fittings are available - the design of the sandal is flexible at the sides so it will fit even pretty wide feet.

Easy to get on and off with elastic straps over the bottom of your toes so usually only the top strap needs loosening.

I really recommend these sandals very highly.

Fitting:

Sizing from an equivalent 6 - 16 US and sizing is true to size.

Plenty of flexibility to the sides will accommodate most foot widths using the securing straps which are velcro.

The elasticated material over the toes sits nice and snug and can be tightened with the front strap although I found this more for aesthetics than function.

The center strap over the top of the instep nicely secures the sandal and when loosened allows the sandal to be easily slid off your foot.

I have to confess the only time I had to use the back strap was one time I had a badly swollen foot, so once the hook & loop is stuck for a good fit, you’ll not be needing to fiddle with that much.

Comfort & Cushioning

I have found this sandal to be very comfortable but not in the sense of walking on pillows.

Rather from the point of view of supporting my arches as I step and I love the little bit of metatarsal support at the balls of my feet.

The insole feels great underfoot and provides quite adequate cushioning I find.

The sandal fits great and is easy to get on and off - it is a real winner for me and I am sure it would be for you too.

Style

I think they are quite stylish though nothing out of the ordinary.

Style wish a huge step up from the horrible looking plastic Crocs, as comfortable as they might be, and on a different planet to flip flops.

You can wear these anytime, anyplace, anywhere - (like Milk Tray someone said???) - as long as it's hot.

Conclusion

An excellent supportive sandal from one of my favorite shoe manufacturers.

Good quality materials though after a couple of years I expect the hook and loop will get loose as in every shoe before it with this securing mechanism.

That is something that can be easily fixed by a cobbler though.

A sturdy, light and great sandal. Get it!!

A relaxed fit quality casual sneaker for women from Vionic with lovely soft nubuck ventilated uppers and easy wear rubber soles.

Fabric wrapped removable quality insole allows for custom alternatives. This is a shoe suited for all-day wear.

Stylish enough for most relaxed office environments yet casual enough for your regular warm weather dates and stylish enough for sassy fashion.

Fitting:

This casual women’s sneaker only comes in medium fittings but the nubuck leather uppers are nicely flexible and will accommodate your foot shape.

However, the fact that they do only come in medium does mean they are more suited to early-stage bunions than to late-stage serious bunions which require a more specialized fit.

The shoes are slip-on, with twin gore color coordinated panels and with a wide range of colors to choose from you won’t have problems with a style match to your existing wardrobe.

Comfort & Cushioning

The Vionic Midi Perf is one lightweight pair of sneakers. I guess sneakers is the right term but they are not the sporty kind - no, no, these are fashion conscious sneakers.

The thing that will have you loving these beauties is the excellent insoles which provide just great under-arch support and have a nice heel cup to correctly position your heel.

The colorways have a lovely range of pastels to choose from as well as black and white, though I must confess those are my least favorite colors in these.

The nubuck uppers are a dream and the ventilation holes are a stroke of genius combining fashion and form to give great breathability.

Style

For casuals these shoes ooze panache though clearly not high fashion.

The excellent and beautiful colors will really set you apart as you'll be able to find the perfect color for whatever you pick to go with them.

They look young and spritely - I really like them.

Conclusion

Excellent supportive casual sneaker for women from Vionic and a real best seller for very good reason.

Easy to wear, lots of color choice and lots of support in a fashionable casual sneaker.

General Features:

An easy slip on sandal from Propet. Simple yet stylish with a removable footbed and coming in a range of width fittings.

The sandal is secured with front and instep hook and loop straps which allows for a huge variety of foot shape restricted only by the extent of the hook and loop fastening. This system makes it easy to adjust the shoe to make room for your bunions.

Good quality leather uppers with some minimal design stitching for style.

A minimal heel and ¾ inch platform for a little height make the sandal an attractive choice.

Fitting:

Medium, Wide and Extra Wide width fittings and half sizes from 5 through to 9.5, then whole sizes 10 - 12, make this shoe a feasible choice for most bunion affected feet.

The design of the shoe, which can be completely opened up when the fastenings are disconnected, enables a huge range of foot shapes to be perfectly well accommodated.

Adjusting for any protruding bunions can be adapted by the front strap whilst the upper strap can be tightened down to give a more secure fit. The bottom strap will also hide the bunion away from view.

The sandal has a slight heel for a bit of lift and a slight platform which is nice.

Comfort & Cushioning

The shoe would find it hard to be uncomfortable given its open and lightweight design.

The insoles do lack a little support however which may be a problem for those with higher arches or flat feet. But the supplied insoles are removable so you can fit your own if necessary.

The wide range of widths and lengths and that removable footbed made the sandal a great option for almost everyone.

There is a range of colors available too from dark red, tan, to black, brown & gray.

Style

What's not to like?

Simple styling with good looking leather uppers and some nice stitching detail set the sandal off.

The corky looking sole adds to the effect giving the whole sandal a light and airy look and says 'freedom'. Least it does to me!

Conclusion

A very versatile sandal from Vionic in sizing and shape with widely adjustable straps make this the perfect sandal for bunion sufferers in the summer and warmer climes.

Bunions sufferers will be blessing the wider widths available that fit true to size and also appreciate being able to hide their bunion from sight thanks to the bottom strap.

The style looks great and will match most casual summer outfits and your toes are blessedly free to move and show off our toe polish designs whilst hiding that bony bump.

Rating:

General Features:

A simply designed clog with a low back and slight heel - an easy fitting shoe.

The flexible upper and width fittings provide room for bunions and give in the upper to shape to your foot.

The shoe has a nylon arch shank for better stability and a rubber sole working together with an air-cushioned heel for shock absorption.

Fitting:

Medium and wide fitting options only for this clog which comes up slightly large if anything.

The lengths are available in half sizes from 5 through to 11 which will be enough to cover a broad range of foot sizes.

The clog is easy to wear and basically just sits on the foot with no direct adjustment to secure it.

Hence it being a clog haha!

Comfort & Cushioning

The airy breathable uppers are a Breeze (pun intended) which presumably gives the clog its name!

The flexible mesh will stretch to fit your big toe joint without squashing and rubbing it too much.

The nylon arch shank provides some stability to the arch and foot and the insoles and sole provide plenty of cushion.

The supplied insoles come out so you can fit custom orthotics if you prefer more support.

Style

Modern.

Clogs might have been for dutch farmers wallowing around in the mud but these have a ton more style.

A premium clog worthy of the premium person you are.

Get fashionable at your next BBQ.

Conclusion

An easy to wear, breathable clog from the renowned Merrell brand.

Good but not awesome sizing options and a few different colors to choose from.

The winning features are the flexible upper for bunion space and decent sole but you want to upgrade those insoles for better heel positioning to reduce slippage and rubbing that slip can cause.

Upper:

Insole:

Rating:

95%

General Features:

A basic slipper cum shoe with a flexible fabric upper and single hook and loop fastener for very simple access on and off.

The rubber sole is an upgrade to what you would find on a normal slipper whilst the upper is the sort of flexible material you might find in a slipper.

A very light slipper-shoe with flexible uppers and occasional outdoor wear suitable for around the house, extreme late stage bunions, or post bunion surgery.

Fitting:

Narrow to extra wide fittings and a very flexible upper means that this shoe will fit unless you have feet that are way different to normal.

The sole has some substance to it, so the shoe is suitable for dry outdoor wear but from the point of durability, it is more suitable to wear indoors.

The shoe does have a removable footbed so you can upgrade to better quality orthotics if it makes sense to you.

Not intended for wear immediately after a bunionectomy (I don’t think you’d be thinking about it anyway), but rather once the recovery process is underway.

Comfort & Cushioning

The Cush ‘n Foot slipper-shoe is pretty comfortable since its main purpose in life is to make your foot as pain free as possible.

The flexible upper creates almost no pressure on your protrusion. There is a comfortable and cushioned removable insole as well to add to the cushioning, albeit limited, of the neoprene sole.

The shoe is not intended as a bunion only option, as it also caters for plantar fasciitis and other serious foot conditions.

Style

It's a slipper for your painful foot - who cares what it looks like as long as it's comfortable. Come on!!

Conclusion

For those with late-stage bunions or in the recovery stage after a bunionectomy, these are pretty much the ideal companion.

Also suited to wearing as a house shoe for comfort.

The design, however, will not be winning any awards for fashion. Who cares?

General Features:

The Mary Jane is the epitome of a professional shoe for women. Suited to teachers, doctors, lawyers and a gazillion other professions it is a plain and simple shoe that just does its job.

The Mt. Emey is such a shoe and with lots of width fittings to please most feet.

Seamless leather uppers and a good quality insole overlaying a well-made sole make for a comfortable shoe for all day walking and standing.

Fitting:

You have loads of fitting options in widths up to extra extra wide and a good range of lengths in half widths to suit just about all of us.

The simple leather instep strap makes it super easy to get on and off and the supportive and quality insole offers great foot arch support.

The insoles are also removable should you need custom orthotics.

Comfort & Cushioning

This is one of the most comfortable shoes in its class. The excellent insole works with the soft springy sole to provide plenty of cushion as you walk.

Your bunions are well catered for by the soft and subtle leather uppers and wide sizing options.

The shoes are excellent for those who have to stand all day at work because of the excellent insoles provided.

They are equally suited to those who have to walk lots at work because of the better stability thanks to the elongated heel counter.

Your toes are treated with the respect they deserve as they are given plenty of space in width and depth in the toe box.

Style

Quintessentially professional shoe you see everwhere from lawyers to schoolteachers, doctors to accountants.

The Mary Jane is a simple and practical style that screams professional.

Conclusion

If you are a professional then these are probably as good an option as you will find so far as lightweight comfortable work shoes go.

The Mt. Emey range of widths and room in the toe box make them especially suited to those of us with bunions and help us return home with feet that are not screaming.

An excellent option as a women’s professional work shoe.

General Features:

The Propet Travel Active Fashion Sneaker is a super lightweight sneaker with a fashionable knit style mesh upper that looks great.

Nothing to set off alarms through security and will not weigh down your luggage.

And bunions love the wide width fittings and easy flexible upper in the wide and deep toe box.

The lacing system is adequate with extra high-level eyelets for better fit for lower insteps.

Fitting:

Propet make shoes to fit feet that look fashionable rather than fashions shoes where fitting your foot is an afterthought.

So there’s lots of fitting options from narrow right the way through to 4E or Extra Extra Wide.

Wouldn't it be nice if manufacturers could agree on consistent sizing then their factories might actually make shoes that fit across styles too.

That wasn’t aimed at Propet by the way, their shoes do seem to have some consistency, just a bugbear of mine.

Back to these awesome shoes.

The lacing system works adequately though I am not a lover of fabric type loops for eyelets since plastic loops allow the laces to run through easier.

But it all works and there are some eyelets high on the sides for those with low insteps to better secure the shoe.

The insoles offer good cushioning and shock absorption in conjunction with the sole.

They are also removable should you need custom orthotics.

Comfort & Cushioning

Cushioning is good, coming largely from the insoles which are high quality.

These are not particularly supportive so if you have high arches or flat feet you might be looking to swapping them out for custom orthotics.

The shoe last is quite square which suits bunion affected feet well as it offers a better toe box shape.

Propet also offer a good depth and design to the toe box which coupled with the widths and sizing should work well to suit most foot shapes.

Just be sure to get the right size for your foot and measure your feet properly.

Style

These are modern and youthful sneakers with a nice fabric upper that are just the ticket for sightseeing and travelling.

Nice and simple but with a simmering undercurrent of you just want to put them on and show them off!

Conclusion

Not just a travel shoe but well suited to anyone who wants a lightweight shoe that you can walk in all day.

The flexible upper and great variety of size options will be a good friend to your bunions all wrapped up in a fashion conscious package available in a wide range of colors to match any outfit you want.

Great Comfortable Shoes.

General Features:

What is the difference between a mule and a clog? Well not very much really except a mule has a lower back to the heel than a clog.

A mule is basically a very low backed clog type shoe some way between a slide (flip flop or sandal) and a clog - at least as far as the terms are used these days.

This mule, available in wide width fittings, comes with classy suede uppers with a little design twist and enough space to make you forget your bunions.

It also features a good quality removable and supportive insoles which coupled with a moderately durable outsole make it a worthwhile candidate.

Fitting:

A good range of width fittings from Narrow through to Extra Wide couple with quite supple, quality suede uppers make it easy for most of us to find a size that will fit well.

The easy style of the shoe allows for a little leeway in fitting and combined with the width options available will ensure you can find a fit that will allow your bunions and toes space to move.

Comfort & Cushioning

The Eliana mule has a good sturdy sole with and EVA midsole which provides shock absorbance and cushioning for your whole foot.

They are extra comfortable and thanks to the design extremely lightweight whilst providing good support and heel positioning thanks to the insoles.

The insoles are quite good quality and supportive but are removable should you need to fit your own custom insoles.

The supplied insoles and midsole ensure for a well-padded bed for your feet which is designed for all day walking in comfort and on into your evening pleasures.

Style

They may be simple mules but the suede uppers add a whole level of luxury to this offering from Easy Spirit.

Not only comfortable but simply smart and a little bit classy because of the materials that say 'comfortable'.

Conclusion

I like Easy Spirit shoes and they have a bunch of styles that look really good.

Most of their styles are not regularly available in the wider fittings but I have found them to always be comfortable, even for longer periods of wear.

The Eliana are particularly suited to bunion sufferers because they DO come in wider widths which give a more spacious toe box.

Be sure to get the right size though as overly long and you will find too much ‘flop’ at the back and overly wide and you will have too much play and lack stability.

A great option if you like the style.

General Features:

The Clarks Unloop is from their unstructured collection which provides for a more relaxed fit of which a wider toe box is part of the deal.

With the true to fit sizing of Clarks and wide width fittings that are generous in their width, you have one part of the requirements for a shoe suitable to feet with bunions.

The other part is support, positioning of the heel and ensuring no seams to rub your bunions as well as overall comfort all of which are satisfied by this shoe.

You should note that aside from the center seam, the stitching in the uppers is decorative.

Fitting:

Clarks have a reputation for well-fitting shoes and that reputation has been around for a very long time.

The unstructured collection has the philosophy of keeping your feet cool while providing great support in a lightweight shoe.

Clarks shoe last gives a wider than average fitting width so the wide fitting can be expected to be slightly wider than normal. Not as wide as a 2E but wider than a normal wide. This gives a little extra width for your bunions.

Unfortunately no extra wide in this shoe so if you have wider than average feet with bunions, even the wide fitting may not be wide enough.

Comfort & Cushioning

If comfort is the controlling factor then you will find satisfaction with this Clarks Unloop shoe.

It is very lightweight, has good arch support from its insoles and a good level of cushioning.

Comfort is the very ethos of the unstructured collection but will they be comfortable if you have bunions?

I think they will because there are no internal seams to rub where your protrusion is, the toe box is nice and spacious and the shoes are generally extraordinarily comfortable.

Very good quality, removable leather insoles give plenty of arch support and cushioning to the whole of the foot. There is something classy about leather insoles I’ve always thought.

The collar of the shoe has a bit of cushioning too as well as in the heel and the whole shoe is lined with lambskin for a luxury feel.

Comfort is definately on the agenda.

Style

Smart leather uppers and detailing on the Unloop make them up to date fashionwise and yet they still fit in classic style

Conclusion

This is a really comfortable pair of shoes that fit really well if you get the right size.

The removable orthotics allow for you to fit custom ones but you really should try out the supplied version because it is really very good.

The only proviso to this shoe for people with bunions is that on some shoes the upper leather is a little harder than some others.

You can easily resolve this by applying several layers of mink oil or other leather softeners to reduce the break-in period.

The problems caused by bunions can be quite serious. In fact, there are some cases when surgery may even be needed to correct the problem! In other cases, it could be necessary to wear a brace. Bunions can cause a significant amount of disruption to your life.

In the worst cases, they can be truly physically disabling. This can prevent you from being able to work out or do any significant physical activity. In the most severe cases, bunions could even prevent you from being able to walk without severe pain.

Hallux Valgus Causes

hallux-valgus-foot

However, it is possible to take steps to prevent them from worsening. Many medical professionals believe that they form as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit properly.

While this theory has never been proven, there is strong evidence for it. In cultures that do not wear shoes, there is no evidence of bunions.

This means that if you already have bunions, you may be able to prevent them from worsening by wearing better fitting footwear.

In fact, wearing footwear that is more bunion friendly could possibly even prevent hallux valgus from becoming significantly worse over the course of time.
